College Is A Waste Of Time.

The thesis statement in paragraph one is, " I believe higher education is broken." Although it is more of an opinionated thesis it is backed up by the last sentence in paragraph three.

Most of the evidence in this essay is in paragraph four. For example, stating the College Board Policy Center research on tuition, the book Academically Adrift, where the professors state "36 percent of college graduates showed no improvement in critical thinking...etc", and then finishing the paragraph with the student loan debt in the U.S. The last sentence in paragraph six is also a fact, because he list where he got the statement from which in the book A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future.

Paragraph nine includes the refutation of the opposing arguments. Stephens mentions that some of the population still want a formal education. He uses the example of a doctor, and how they might not want to keep cadavers in their garage. Through this paragraph uses the word "challenge" making one consider the opportunity costs. Stephan then ends the paragraph with a few questions about what one can do, or achieve with in fifty minutes.

Stephan concluding statements  in paragraph ten are the two sentences. One of them states, "We who take our education outside and beyond the classroom understand how actions build better world." making the audience know that wether the education stops at high school or continues to college the world is going to change. Just depends on how one wants to use their education in the future.

Dale Stephans uses logos, pathos, and ethos to make a strong argument based on why college is a waste of time.  He makes sure to back up any opinion with facts, and giving the credit to those who provided the facts, both logos and ethos. Stephan uses pathos when he talks about ones time being wasted and about the future. Humans always think about their future, not just teenagers, making it personal to the audience .

  1. I agree with your statement that most of the evidence is located in paragraph 4. He includes 3 (sourced) statistics within this paragraph, while not using any in the following paragraphs.
